Is UV Radiation Good or Bad for You?

April 17, 2018 - Eye Health

Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam and I’m on my morning hike today taking in the sunlight.

I want to talk a bit about UV light and its pros and cons. So is it good for you or not?

There’s definitely some research out there that shows that overexposure to UV lights from the sun can cause conditions like macular degeneration, cataracts, and even skin cancer. However it’s very important that we get natural light every day by going outside and getting light without our UV protecting lenses because sun exposure in small amounts has been shown to be really beneficial for things like improving our immune system, reducing inflammation in the body, balancing our circadian rhythms and our which involves our Pineal Gland. So it’s important to consider light as a food for our bodies. It can impact our nervous system our endocrine system, our eyes, and vision.

So my recommendation would be to get some sunlight before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. Get outside and get at least 30 minutes of light into your eyes and into your body every day. It’s a very important nutrient. I don’t want you to be afraid of it, but you should normally wear sunglasses between 10am – 5pm. And this way you’re getting the light diet in a moderate way but don’t be afraid of the light because we need it as part of our nutrients.

Well, that’s my message for today. Thank you so much for tuning in. And until next time take good care.
