The Problem with Wheat

January 17, 2019 - Nutrition

Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam. I received the question today whether wheat can be a cause of inflammation in the body.

I’m going to point you to a 2013 study that was published in the journal Nutrients. The authors reviewed many different studies that looked at the impact of wheat consumption on inflammation.

The results showed that overall if you eat wheat, particularly cereals and other processed foods, you have a higher risk of developing chronic inflammation in the body, autoimmune diseases, and an imbalance in your intestinal permeability.

So my takeaway is that if you feel that you’re sensitive to gluten products, I would reduce or eliminate wheat products from your diet.

Generally speaking, there is a mountain of scientific research that points towards reducing carbohydrates and increasing consumption of healthful fats and oil, vegetables, and other whole foods. So even if you aren’t sensitive to gluten, I’d recommend giving a lower-carb style of eating a try for at least 3-6 months. You might be amazed at the difference you feel in terms of body composition, mental clarity, and overall eye health. This without a doubt is a smart move not just for your eyes, but your overall systemic health. And eat things like healthy fats and oils low carbs and organic vegetables and fruits to increase your antioxidants in the body. And this will help not only your systemic health.
