Sugar’s Role in Inflammation

January 9, 2019 - Nutrition

Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam and I receive a question today about whether sugar causes inflammation.

There was a study published in 2011 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition where researchers took a group of young men and gave them moderate amounts of sugar-sweetened beverages over a three week period. The researchers found, using blood biomarkers, that these men had a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammation, and their glucose levels were out of balance.

Other studies have shown that eating sugar could be linked to conditions like diabetes, cancer, leaky gut syndrome, and even cataracts.

So my takeaway is that in terms of your overall health and wellness, I would recommend a diet low in carbs, high in healthful fats and oils, and if you choose to do sweeteners, I would recommend sweeteners with a low glycemic index.

This strategy will without a doubt be beneficial for your eyes and overall health.

So that’s my message for today. Thank you so much for tuning in. And until next time take good care.
