Iridology assesses the color, structure, and patterns of the Iris (the colored part of the eye.
Iridology can reveal the inherent strengths and weaknesses of organs, glands, and tissues. Inherently weak organs do not utilize nutrients as well as they should, nor do they have the ability to discharge toxins. Sometimes, pigments, markings, and other patterns suggest possible places in the body that need special nurturing to maintain health.
Iridology can show inflammation signs in the body, how an organ or gland will react to illness, and genetic patterns you may tend to develop—like heart problems, issues with the pancreas, thyroid, adrenals, reproductive organs, and the liver.
The Iris can show what foods are beneficial for health and potential imbalances in the nervous system.
In Iridology, we examine the shape of the pupil border, which tells us about the health and alignment of the spine.
The Iris can also show where there might be weaknesses in the body connective tissue body’s connective tissue, a tendency towards varicose veins, hiatal hernias, hemorrhoids, or scoliosis.
Iridology can show potential glandular deficiencies, high cholesterol, uric levels, and/or lymphatic congestion.
Here are things Iridology cannot do:
We never diagnose or name any disease in an iridology analysis. We can’t determine conditions like parasites or candida. We cannot confirm bacterial, viral, or fungal infections in the body or if a woman is pregnant. Diagnose tumors, cancer, or whether a person has kidney stones.
In Iridology, iris color types—blue, hazel (mixed), and brown—are traditionally associated with different constitutional types. These types offer clues about metabolic tendencies and general wellness approaches, including food.
Here’s a basic overview of food recommendations by eye color:
Blue Eyes (Lymphatic Type)
They often have light blue, gray, or green-blue irises.
Tendencies:
– Sluggish lymphatic system
– Mucus and sinus congestion
– Inflammatory responses (especially in upper respiratory tract)
– Sensitivity to dairy, sugar, and gluten
Recommended Foods:
– Light, anti-inflammatory diet
Leafy green sprouts, celery, cucumber, lemon water
Berries, apples, pears
Herbal teas**: nettle, dandelion, mullein, oat straw, and red clover
Omega-3 rich oils (flax, chia, wild fish)
Avoid or Minimize:
– Dairy products
– Refined sugar or high hypoglycemic foods
– Heavy starches (white bread, pastries)
The second Iris color is
Hazel or Mixed Eyes (Biliary/Mixed Type)
Often appear green, light brown, or a blend of blue and brown.
Tendencies:
– Digestive and liver stress
– Blood sugar fluctuations
– Bile insufficiency or sluggish gallbladder
– Skin breakouts, headaches after rich food
Recommended Foods:**
– **Liver-supporting foods**: beets, cabbage, carrots, artichoke, lemon, turmeric
– High-fiber vegetables: broccoli, kale, radishes
– Low-glycemic fruits: berries, cherries, grapefruit
– Bitters (arugula, dandelion greens, ginger)
Avoid or Minimize:
– Fried, greasy, or overly rich foods

– Food additives and dyes
The third Iris color is:
Brown Eyes (Hematogenic Type)
Typically dark brown or black-brown, it may look velvety or uniform.
Tendencies:
– Strong constitution but may struggle with blood toxicity or sluggish elimination
– Prone to liver congestion and bowel sluggishness
– Risk of mineral imbalances or blood sugar dysregulation
Recommended Foods:
Mineral-rich foods**: seaweed, dark greens, lentils, quinoa
Clean proteins: wild fish, beans, eggs
Chlorophyll-rich foods** (spirulina, wheatgrass)
Warm, cooked vegetables for better digestion
Avoid or Minimize:

Before I end this blog, I want to honor Bernard Jensen, a pioneer in developing the practice of Iridology in the United States and more than 55 countries worldwide. Dr. Jensen developed many successful natural living, nutritional, and detoxification programs. His daughter-in-law, Dr. Ellen Jensen (my teacher), continues his work today. The science of the Iris is fantastic, and it is such an accurate map of the body. If you would like a reading, contact us at appointments@drsamberne.com. I am also able to do remote sessions and in-office appointments.
