October 11, 2018 - Vertigo
Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam and I’m on my morning hike and I wanted to talk to you today about vertigo. This is a very serious condition sometimes better-known as Meniere’s Disease.
Vertigo is an imbalance in the inner ear – the vestibular system. I talk about the perceptual triangle, where we engage our vestibular system with our eyes and our feet. It’s very important that we have a balanced relationship with all three. One of the things I observe in our culture is that we overfocus with our eyes and this causes our vestibular system to shut off – this is going to affect our balance.
So a simple way to engage our vestibular system and our feet is to engage our peripheral vision. Diet also plays a big role, so reduce overconsumption of salt, caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods. Make sure you get enough antioxidants, nuts, seeds, and nutrients like phosphorous, magnesium, selenium, and chromium.
So that’s my message for today. Take care.
