A nutrition-focused approach to reversing diabetes

December 18, 2017 - Eye Health

Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam. Today I wanted to talk to you about how to reverse diabetes through nutritional changes. I’d like to discuss some ways to help neutralize and reverse diabetes.

  1. Eliminate dairy products – especially cow’s milk. If you are going to consume dairy I would do goat’s milk or sheep’s milk, because those can help balance your insulin levels.
  2. Adopt a gluten-free diet – the go-to source on this topic is Dr. Perlmutter’s book, “Grain Brain”. If you eliminate gluten, you reduce the inflammatory response in your intestinal tract and brain. This balances your blood sugar levels.
  3. Increase magnesium levels – most people are deficient in this trace mineral. Sources of magnesium include nuts and seeds, swiss chards, spinach, grass-fed beef, and other green leafy vegetables.
  4. Increase chromium levels – chromium helps us metabolize our carbohydrates and sugars. Sources of chromium include pasture-raised eggs, sweet potato, and non-GMO corn.
  5. Eliminate sugars from the diet – this includes regular sodas, diet sodas, fruit juices, ice cream, pastries, and cereals. If you are going to eat sugar, I would recommend low-glycemic index options, such as Stevia or Blackstrap molasses.
  6. Increase your fiber intake – great sources include legumes, pumpkin seeds, almonds, and green leafy vegetables.
  7. Increase your protein intake – sockeye salmon, grass-fed beef, organic chicken, and turkey.
  8. Increase your healthy fat intake – coconut oil, MCT oil, and avocados.
  9. Supplement with alpha-lipoic acid, magnesium, fish oil, and chromium.
  10. Eliminate stress levels – you can begin a mindfulness practice like meditation or yoga.
  11. Exercise regularly – at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.
