September 9, 2019 - Macular Degeneration
Hello everyone, is Dr. Sam. I received a question the other day: Does eating a Mediterranean diet have an effect on our eye health? Well we know that the Mediterranean diet can do things like reduce inflammation, reduce obesity, may prevent certain types of cancer, and improve our heart health. Well today I want to weigh in on this question: Does the Mediterranean diet affect our health?
So I’m going to point you to a study that was published in 2018 in the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Researchers took 5000 people over the age of 50 and they did a food frequency questionnaire. And they found that people who ate a Mediterranean diet had a 41 percent reduced risk of developing late stages of age related macular degeneration. So the researchers concluded that eating a Mediterranean diet may reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration. So in other videos I’ve talked about lifestyle, stress reduction, and diet as a way to improve our macular health. So this is an interesting idea to include the Mediterranean diet as part of the protocol – not only improving our overall wellness, but also our eye health. So that’s my message for today. Thank you so much for tuning in. And until next time, take good care.
