Meditation for Reducing Eye Pressure

March 12, 2019 - Glaucoma

Hi everybody, it’s Dr. Sam. I received a question today: what adjunct therapies can be done to reduce eye pressure, if you’re diagnosed with glaucoma?

There was a study published in 2018 in the Journal of Glaucoma. Researchers took 90 people who’d been diagnosed with glaucoma and split them into two groups. One group was a waitlist control group while the other did 21 days of mindfulness meditation.

They monitored their blood serum levels things like cortisone and BDNF. They also measured their eye pressures. The results clearly showed that those that did the mindfulness meditation had lower stress markers in their blood serum levels, and they reduced their eye pressure by about six millimeters in each eye.

So they concluded that mindfulness meditation may be a great adjunct therapy to help people reduce their eye pressure.

This is yet another study showing the impact that stress can have on eye health, so I recommend mindfulness meditation as yet another way to reduce eye pressure naturally.

That’s my message for today. Thank you so much for tuning in. And until next time, take good care.
