“Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam and I wanted to share some research studies on lutein and zeaxanthin as it relates to eye health.
One of my favorite studies was done at the Blue Mountains Eye Center and the results were published in the Journal of Opthalmology. Their results show that if you take lutein and zeaxanthin you reduce your risk for age-related macular degeneration.
Another important study was published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition and it combined 12mg of Lutein with 800mg of DHA. They found that patients who took these supplements realized a synergistic effect that reduced the risk of macular degeneration.
So we know that carotenoids are very important for our eye health. Some of my go-to foods include winter squash, pumpkins, sweet potatos, orange bell peppers, green leafy vegetables – broccoli, kale, spinach, brussel sprouts, and I also like avocados, beets, and goji berries. These are all packed with carotenoids that help protect our macula from UV radiation and blue-light from digital devices.
The recommended daily dosage of lutein is 10-15mg and 2-6mg of zeaxanthin.”
