Is the Mediterranean Diet a Viable Path to Better Eye Health?

March 12, 2019 - Nutrition

Hello everyone, it’s Dr. Sam. I received a question the other day: Does eating a Mediterranean diet have an effect on our eye health?

Well, we know that the Mediterranean diet can do things like reducing inflammation, obesity, may prevent certain types of cancer, and improve heart health.

But what about eye health? I’m going to point you to a study that was published in 2018. Researchers from The American Academy of Ophthalmology took roughly 5,000 people over the age of 50 and they administered a food frequency questionnaire. They found that people who ate a Mediterranean diet had a 41 percent reduced risk of developing late stages of age-related macular degeneration.

The researchers concluded that eating a Mediterranean diet may reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration.

In other videos, I’ve talked about lifestyle, stress reduction, and diet as a way to improve our macular health. This study reinforces that the Mediterranean diet may be a viable path for improving eye health and overall wellness.

That’s my message for today. Thank you so much for tuning in. And until next time, take good care.
