When our environment becomes darker, our vision tends to collapse. We lose our ability to sustain our peripheral vision, which, for driving, is incredibly important. There are a few things you can do to improve your night vision.
- Yin Yang Peripheral Vision Game – This is a soft-focus eye exercise that teaches you how to open your focus to use both eyes together while engaging your central and peripheral vision.
- Palming Eye Exercise – Doing this throughout the day is a great method for reducing eye muscle stress.
- Reducing the use of digital devices could be helpful, especially if you’re about to drive at night.
- Spending a little bit of time in the dark before you start driving will give your retinas a chance to adapt to darker settings.
- Antioxidants are also critically important for improving your eye health. Especially vitamin A, beta-carotene, and Bilberry. Things like lutein and zeaxanthin, as well as getting enough healthy fats and essential trace minerals are also important.
- Using single vision lenses while driving instead of progressive bifocals is essential. Using bifocals can strain your eyes because you are not using the entire lense.
- Sometimes I’ve prescribed red-tinted lenses, which can give you better contrast for night vision.
Overall it’s really important that you get enough retinal circulation so that you can engage more of your visual field in the dark. In addition to balancing out your center vision with your peripheral vision, these suggestions will give you a good chance of improving your night vision.
