Glutathione and Depression

January 17, 2019 - Nutrition

Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam and I received a question about the relationship between depression and oxidative stress.

There was a study published in 2012 in the Journal of Psychiatric Research. The authors took two groups of people – one group was healthy and the other group was diagnosed with depression. Using skin biopsies, they found that folks diagnosed with depression had higher levels of free radical damage and accumulated oxidative stress.

So the authors marked oxidative stress as a key variable in the development and progression of depression. They noted that one remedy for reducing oxidative stress is increasing glutathione levels. If you’ve watched my videos for a while, you’ve probably heard me refer to this as the “master antioxidant”.

There are some very important things to know about glutathione. First, glutathione helps support cardiovascular health. Second, it helps eliminate toxicities from the body. Third, it helps protect the eye from free radical damage, which underpins eye conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

So if you have depression, glutathione is certainly one variable to consider. It is not a magic bullet, but over time if you stick with it, you may start to see substantial improvements over time. Trust the process – depression is deeply tied to our diet and lifestyle.

So that’s my message for today. Thank you so much for tuning in. And until next time take good care.
