September 17, 2018 - Glaucoma
Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam and I want to talk to you today about how to improve your eye circulation especially if you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma.
Causes of Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease where you’re not producing enough fluid in the eye or the flow is impeded through the canals and meshwork. Over time this damages the optic nerve and reduces your visual field and peripheral vision. And some of the causes of glaucoma include:
- oxidative stress
- physical trauma
- computer use
- endocrine imbalances, especially thyroid disease
- pharmaceutical drugs – taking things like steroids can actually increase your eye pressure
How to Reduce Eye Pressure
So it’s critically important that you do some proactive things to improve your circulation because glaucoma is a very serious condition. I would recommend:
- Reduce your stress levels.
- Eat an anti-inflammatory rainbow diet that is high in healthful fats, oils, and antioxidants. The greens include kale, spinach, and other green leafy vegetables. The reds and oranges include peppers, oranges, beets, squash, and other fruits and vegetables. These are all really important for overall health and particularly beneficial in the eyes for reducing oxidative stress.
- I would reduce inflammation. Talk to your functional medicine doctor about increasing your digestive health. Things like probiotics and prebiotic fiber are super important for reducing inflammation and maximizing the absorption of other nutrients consumed through your diet. If you’ve got heavy metal toxicities, maybe doing some detoxification could be very helpful.
- My eye exercises are fantastic for improving eye circulation and reducing visual stress.
- Wear blue-blocking lenses if you’re using digital devices. This will help reduce the damaging effect blue light has on all the tissues
Remember, you don’t have to live out your doctor’s diagnosis. There are many things you can do proactively to improve your eyes at any age. Thanks so much for tuning in. And until next time take good care.
