Genetic Influence on Cataracts

May 3, 2019 - Cataracts

Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam. I received a great question today: Is there a genetic connection to developing cataracts?

There was a paper published in 2007 in The Archives of Ophthalmology. Researchers took a look at many different studies and they found that if one of your family members has cataracts you have a moderate chance of developing cataracts yourself.

I’m going to bring in a new concept here something called epigenetics. This says that the genes can expressed differently based on our environment. And this is why I talk about improving your diet, reducing your visual stress, doing the eye exercises and the eyedrops, changing your lifestyle, making sure you’re using blue blocking glasses for all digital time.

There are ways that you can neutralize the effects that genetics have on us. And this definitely is something you want to take a look at in terms of preventing cataracts.
