Do Digital Devices Disrupt Sleep?

October 4, 2018 - Blue Light

Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam and I want to pose a question to you today – how many digital device users out there spend their evenings looking at these devices and maybe have a difficult time falling asleep?

This is the subject of research in a new article out in National Geographic where researchers now are studying the effects of blue light exposure on our sleep cycles and circadian rhythm. And of course, this is important because a good nights sleep boosts our immune system and reduces our risk of serious chronic diseases like dementia.

Similarly, the University of Toledo has also put out a research study on the effects of blue light and how it may damage our retina. So not only is overexposure to blue light linked to poor sleep, but it may also contribute to eye problems.

My advice would be to stop using your digital devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Also, make sure you’re using your blue blockers, especially in the evening. Lastly, eat those carotenoids – especially lutein and zeaxanthin, which help protect the macula from damaging lights.

So that’s my message for today. Thank you so much for tuning in. And until next time take good care.
