“Hey everybody, it’s Dr. Sam. I received a question today on Facebook – what are good enzymes to take for eye health?
Well, two come to mind – serrapeptase and nattokinase. These enzymes that help dissolve debris in the blood and eye tissue. When we are not able to dissolve debris, we become susceptible to conditions like allergies, arthritis, and heart disease. In terms of eye disease, we become susceptible to getting macular edema, iritis, and uveitis.
In the pancreas, we produce pancreatic enzymes that support proper digestion. As we age, we produce less of these enzymes. These enzymes are really important because they help us break down our foods. So I recommend a full digestive enzyme supplement – something that contains amylase, protease, lipase, and cellulase. I would take it after a meal, twice a day, and that should help support dietary absorption. I would also supplement with probiotics. With proper enzymes and probiotics, you are reducing the chance of creating an inflammatory response in the eyes and the body.
There was a study, that came out in 2009 in the Journal of Opthalmology, that said if you eat a low glycemic index diet, you have a lower chance of getting age-related macular degeneration.”
