The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin have been shown to play an instrumental role in preventing eye diseases like macular degeneration. I want to now introduce a third carotenoid called astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is a marine carotenoid found in foods like wild-caught salmon, algae, and lobster.
In a paper published in 2011 on Marine Drugs, researchers examined both animals and humans and concluded that there was substantial evidence that astaxanthin may help protect against cardiovascular disease, reduce oxidative stress, and reduce overall inflammation in the body. Other studies have also looked at astaxanthin’s important role in protecting the retina from oxidative stress.
Getting plenty of astaxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin in your dietary protocol will not only protect your macula but are essential in protecting your entire body from oxidative stress.
