Are Costume Contact Lenses Safe?

October 17, 2018 - Prescription lenses

Hi everybody, it’s Dr. Sam and I want to talk to you about Halloween and costume contact lenses.

So it’s that time of year when you want to dress up and go out for trick or treat. And these costume contact lenses are a great accessory to your costume because they can make you very scary and mysterious. They actually can change your eye color and give you very different eyes.

My advice, however, is to go to an eye doctor and get these costume contact lenses fitted properly. I have had many patients over the year who go to a store and they buy these contact lenses off the rack. And what ends up happening is they develop corneal abrasions, which can be very painful for the cornea of the eye.

It may also enhance dry-eye syndrome, or lead to a condition called keratitis, which is a bacterial infection that forms on the cornea and can leave damaging scar tissue.

The other thing that happens is when you just buy contacts over-the-counter is that it creates an oxygenation problem on the cornea. This may cause weak blood vessels to form, and even lead to hemorrhaging or other damage to eye tissue.

So my advice is to visit an eye doctor to get the contact lens properly fitted for your eyes to avoid these potential side effects.
