If you when you blink, you feel like there is sand in your eyes, you’ll need more than eye drops to solve your problem. This sensation comes from blocked oil glands, and there are a number of treatments you can do to reduce this sensation. First, you should consider if there is an inflammatory response happening in your eyes and/or body. I would also evaluate what your stress levels are in both your eyes and throughout your body. Once you’ve done that, you’ll have a better idea of the root cause of this sensation.
One thing you can do to treat the problem locally is an Eyebright compress. Eyebright is an herbal remedy that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. For this treatment, you should use the loose-leaf tea form of eyebright from a locally source herbalist if possible. Brew the tea in boiling water for 5-6 minutes and then let it settle for 10 minutes. Once you strain the mixture, you’ll have a very valuable liquid called “Eyebright”. I would suggest alternating between hot and cold compresses with the tea. Hot compress massages can dilate blocked glands, which can help alleviate the feeling of sand in your eyes. You can supplement the compresses with Similasan or Optique homeopathic eye drops. I would recommend using them 4-8 times per day and adding them to your eye massage and eye bath formulas.
Though massage and relaxation are very helpful, supporting these techniques with a few eye exercises can improve your overall eye health. Exercises like eye stretch, the animal eye chart, and the N Palm Hum are all great to improve the eye lymph. Craniosacral therapy is another helpful modality through which to help dry eye syndrome and clear blocked tear ducts. I would also consider starting acupuncture, increasing your consumption of probiotics, fats and oils, and eating a more plant-based diet to reduce inflammation in the body.
Changing lifestyle, diet, and using herbal remedies are all things you can do on a macro level to improve your overall health and address the problem holistically.
