Omega-3s Improve Corneal Health and Tear Production

January 4, 2019 - Eye Health

Hey folks, it’s Dr. Sam and I want to talk to you today about the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids for our eyes.

In 2011 there was a study published in The Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism. The researchers listed a number of studies showing the benefits of omega 3 on our retina – specifically the DHA part of Omega 3 fatty acids. The benefits cited included anti-inflammatory properties and improved vascular health.

More recently, in 2017, there was a study published in The Journal of Opthalmics and Physiological Optics – this was a dry eye study. Researchers took 60 percent participants, 30 of whom received placebo, and 30 received omega 3 fatty acids. After the 90 day period those that took the omega 3 fatty acids had better tear quality and more density in their corneal nerves. In other words, their corneas were healthier just 90 days after beginning to take an omega-3 supplement.

There are many sources of omega-3s and DHA in whole foods. Some vegan and vegetarian options include chia seeds, walnuts, algae, edamame, and flax seeds. If you choose to consume animal products, oily fish like wild-caught sockeye salmon, mackeral, and sardines are all great options.

Without a doubt, omega-3s are absolutely essential for our overall health, especially for the health of our eyes. Given that it’s been estimated that nearly 90% of Americans are deficient in omega-3s, I strongly suggest you take a look at your diet and make sure that you’re getting enough omega-3s through your diet. And if you’re not, add some of these foods to your diet and consider supplementing with an omega-3 supplement that is at least 90% triglyceride bound (this helps improve absorption).

Thanks so much for tuning in. And until next time take good care.
